In my Environmental Issues class we were instructed to write to our state representative about a climate change issue. I wrote to the Senator of New Jersey, Cory Booker, since I am from New Jersey. I explained how irrational of a decision it was for the Trump Administration to withdraw from the Paris Agreement. I went into detail of what the Paris Agreement was and even though we have withdrawn from it the withdrawal will not effect us. I also wrote on the Clean Power Act and how the proposition on withdrawing from this will ultimately create more havoc for the environment. I explained that we need to create a state clean power act because even though there could possibly not be a Federal Clean Power Act that does not mean that the states cannot come up with a plan for clean power. With my learning in our English class I learned to explain everything, and use proper comma structure. Learning core fundamentals for writing in this class has bettered my writing in other classes. My paper to Senator Booker is below, and my teacher informed me that with a few quick changes I should send it to the senator and see what he has to say.

Environmental Paper:

The Honorable Cory Anthony Booker

Dear Senator Booker,

As of recent, the United States has announced their decision to withdraw from the Paris Agreement. The Trump administration has decided to do this and I believe this administration is making a big mistake. The Paris Agreement is a wonderful policy that has been developed for all countries to partake in, and the United States is the only country to withdraw from this policy. The Paris Agreement has been developed to accommodate vulnerable, developing, and developed countries. While the withdrawal of the Paris Agreement does allow the United States to create coal plants and more energy plants that does create jobs which is positive; it leads to a higher amount of emissions from the United States which is negative. If the Trump administration did not withdrawal from the Paris Agreement every country could start their plan that they proposed to the people of the Paris Agreement, and start reducing emissions causing the Earth’s temperature rise to decrease. The United States will allow pollution to rise and this will continue to harm the environment that all people have come to love. If all countries continue their plan with the Paris Agreement it will not do too much because the United States makes up a huge portion of the world’s population.

In addition to the withdrawal of the Paris Agreement, Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt made a proposition to remove the Clean Power Act. This proposition was not proposed until after the Trump Administration had announced that they were withdrawing from the Paris Agreement. With Scott Pruitt’s proposition all power source would be allowed and there would not be means as to create more environmentally safe and more energy efficient ways of power. I am not sure as to why Scott Pruitt made the proposition, but it only has to be so he stays on good terms with President Trump. Withdrawing from both of these policies will set the United States up for a bad future and unhealthy relations with other countries. These relations could be loss in trade, loss in military alliance, and even loss in overseas business contracts. Environmental issues for the United States would increase with the addition of coal factories, large power plants, and more fossil fuel usage. The carbon deposit will increase causing major weather shifts from the west to the east. The United States of America holds billions of people and with the usage of more harmful resources leads to an overall increase in greenhouse gases and emissions all around. Polar ice cap melting will increase because the winds will bring the carbon deposits North. Waterways will become uninhabitable for fisheries and unusable for human consumption because the waste waters from the power plants and other factories will find their way into the waterways.

I believe that at a state level New Jersey can still develop a plan to create ways to have clean power and use renewable resources. Just because the Trump administration has withdrawn from the Paris Agreement does not mean that states cannot do something to help the world. After all, the United States withdrawal will not be activated until the year 2021 because once withdrawal is announced it takes 5 years for their uninvolvement to happen. By that time the United States could possibly have another President because the election for a new President is in the year 2020. Just because on a national level President Trump announces that the United States will not partake in the Paris Agreement, and Scott Pruitt announced that the United States will not go through with the Clean Power Act does not mean states cannot develop ways to create clean and more efficient ways to produce power.

In conclusion, I believe it was a poor decision by the Trump administration and Scott Pruitt, but that does not meant that the citizens of the United States can not develop plans of their own to help reduce energy use and emissions. I want plans to create clean power. Solar farms can be established so that each state can reduce power plant emissions and use clean resources to produce power. Large scale businesses can use resources and recycle old products to reduce the production of emissions when creating new products. Usage of renewable resources and reusable resources can be achieved on a state level even with the United States decision to withdraw from the Paris Agreement. If each state grows awareness of how much pollution they are producing and how much energy they are wasting, there can be plans to start reducing their numbers hence creating a cleaner and healthier environment for the future. Thank you for your time in reading this letter. I hope you take this into consideration so the State of New Jersey can start a way to create a safer environment for the future.

Sincerely,

Christopher R. Spino
